fix(react-core): keep a tool call group's look from its first call - #8028
The first tool call of a run looked nothing like the group it turned into. A group of one call rendered that call's own standalone card, then switched to the group's card when the next call arrived.
Grouped (default): one call gets the same card as several. While it works it reads "Running run_command gh run view 8412 --log-failed", and once done "Used 1 tool · run_command · Done". The card leaves out "0 done" until a call has finished.
Stacked: a lone call is the stack's top card with nothing behind it yet, instead of the standalone card.
Stacked, open: the calls list in the same compact card (status icon, name, arguments) instead of the standalone tool card. They ease out of the stack with a short fade and a 6px drop, staggered 30ms apart (none with reduced motion). "Collapse" moves to the right of the header.
The line display is unchanged.
Test plan
react-core type-check and tests pass (2616)
New tests: a lone call in the grouped card (running without a count, then "Used 1 tool"), a lone call as the top card of a stack, and an open stack listing compact cards with Collapse. The lone-call tests fail on the old code.
Checked live in Storybook (UI/Tool call display: Grouped, Stacked)
The tool-call group adds a stack appearance and changes how expanded stacks and single-call groups render. Closed stacks expose status text and announce status changes. Running card summaries show a completed-call count only when at least one call is done.

Stack row and expanded-card rendering packages/react-core/src/v2/components/chat/CopilotChatToolCallGroup.tsx, packages/react-core/src/v2/components/chat/__tests__/CopilotChatMessageView.toolCallDisplay.test.tsx, packages/react-core/src/v2/styles/globals.css, showcase/shell-docs/src/content/reference/components/CopilotChatToolCallGroup.mdx
The stack appearance uses distinct row spacing and updated controls. Expanded calls render as separate cards with staggered animation. Tests cover opening the stack and its compact call rows. Documentation describes the expanded stack and one-call behavior.
Single-call summaries and status packages/react-core/src/v2/components/chat/CopilotChatToolCallGroup.tsx, packages/react-core/src/v2/components/chat/__tests__/CopilotChatMessageView.toolCallDisplay.test.tsx
Single calls use the group card in card appearance and the stack layout in stack appearance. Closed stack controls expose status text and announce status changes. Running summaries show a completed-call count only when at least one call is done. Tests cover these displays and status updates.
CopilotKit/CopilotKit#7938: Adds grouped, line, and stacked tool-call displays that this change updates.

Heads up, the docs still say a single call gets its own card (CopilotChatToolCallGroup.mdx:60). That's not true anymore after this PR. Same file line 12 and the comment at CopilotChatToolCallGroup.tsx:334 say compact rows are only in card and line, but an open stack has them now too. Can you update those?
With group: true, a single call used to show up right in the chat. Now it's tucked behind a closed "Used 1 tool" card, and in stacked it doesn't even render until you open it. Probably what you want since bigger groups already work like that, but there's only a test for two calls (CopilotChatMessageView.toolCallDisplay.test.tsx:290). Can you add one for a single call?
Docs:CopilotChatToolCallGroup.mdx now says a group of one call looks like a group of several ("Running run_command", then "Used 1 tool"; the stack shows its top card with nothing behind it) and stays closed until opened, like a bigger group. Line 12 and the comment in CopilotChatToolCallGroup.tsx now include the open stack among the places that draw compact rows.
Test: "tucks a single opted-in call into a closed group too" covers a single call from a custom group: true renderer: a closed "Used 1 tool" card in grouped, and in stacked the call renders only once the stack is opened.
I also gave the collapsed stack header a screen-reader status (CodeRabbit's note).

Assert the custom renderer in the expanded default card.
The grouped branch checks only the closed summary. The adjacent lone-call card test also does not expand the card. A regression that affects custom rendering only after grouped-card expansion would pass.

A group of one call rendered that call's own card, so the first call of a
run looked nothing like the group it turned into once the next call
arrived. The grouped and stacked displays now draw one call the way they
draw several: the grouped card reads "Running run_command" while it works
and "Used 1 tool" once done (leaving out "0 done" until a call finishes),
and the stack shows its top card with nothing behind it yet.
An open stack now lists its calls in that same compact card instead of the
standalone tool card, easing them out of the stack with a short fade and a
6px drop, and puts "Collapse" on the right.

- The CopilotChatToolCallGroup reference and component comment said a
group of one call draws that call's own card, and that compact rows
appear only in the card and line appearances. A lone call now looks like
a group of several, and an open stack shows compact rows too.
- Test that a single call from a custom `group: true` renderer is tucked
into a closed group: "Used 1 tool" in the card, and rendered only once a
stack is opened.
- The collapsed stack's status icon is decorative, so its header now says
the status to screen readers.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The stack header named its status to screen readers, but nothing announced
it changing from Running to Done. A polite live region beside the header,
always mounted, now carries the closed stack's status.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The live region said only "Done", which doesn't say which call finished
when an earlier one is still open. It now names the latest call:
"read_file: Done".
