fix(virtual-core): stop a touch fling for a command issued during it on Android too - #1347
In Chrome on Android, a scrollToIndex / scrollToOffset / scrollToEnd issued during a touch fling is written, and then the fling carries on from the written position (Pixel 6: ~3,200px past the target, 3 runs of 3). #1332 stops the fling before such a command on iOS 27. This extends that to every platform where a write does not end the fling, which is everywhere except iOS 26 and earlier.
IosGesture._openTail
- if (!isIOSWebKit() || win == null) return # no tail off iOS+ if (win == null) return # tail tracked everywhere
_startScroll (absolute, tail === 'fling')
- && iosMomentumOverridesWrites()+ && momentumOverridesWrites() # !isIOSWebKit() || iosMomentumOverridesWrites()
_stopMomentum
+ hiding the overflow changed clientWidth (clientHeight when horizontal)?+ a classic scrollbar: restore in the same task, leave the command to the tail
Off iOS the tail defers nothing. _canWriteScroll and _awaitingCommandReadBack keep their isIOSWebKit() gates, so the only new reader of the tail off iOS is _startScroll. onTailClosed now runs off iOS as well; with no hold and no queued command, its flush and write do nothing, and _retryClampedAdjustment gets one more chance to run.
A tap's tail (moved unset) still writes at once. Input with no touch (wheel, scrollbar, keyboard) opens no tail, so desktop is unchanged.
The classic-scrollbar check is for touchscreen laptops: there, hiding overflow-y removes a scrollbar that takes layout space, so the content would reflow for two frames. If the cross-axis client size changes when the overflow is hidden, the value is put back in the same task, so it is never painted, and the command waits for the tail to close, as it does when the element has no style. On iOS and Android the scrollbars are overlays, so the check never triggers there.
iOS 26 and earlier are unchanged: the gate is false there and the command is written at once.
Evidence
The device page is plain virtual-core with no framework: 20,000 rows of 50px, with DOM rows keyed so the touched row stays mounted. 150ms after touchend, a timer calls scrollToIndex(12345, { align: 'start' }) (target 617250). The page reads the position 1.5s later, along with the first six frames after the call.

Tests:
ios-fling-wait.test.ts
Android: mid-fling command → hidden, two frames, write [4500], tail ended
Android: command after a tap / with no touch → written at once, overflow untouched
classic scrollbar → overflow back within the call, write when the tail closes
ios-gesture.test.ts

momentumOverridesWrites: iOS 26 false, iOS 27 true, non-iOS true
ios-deferral.test.ts
non-iOS: touchend arms a tail that holds no correction back
(replaces "non-iOS still does NOT install touch state machine")
Each new test fails when its part of the change is reverted: the tail iOS-only again, the gate iOS 27 only again, or no scrollbar check.
scroll-trace snapshot: the web traces that contain touch steps change. A command issued while a drag's tail is open now goes through the stop. The simulated element has no style, so the stop falls back to the tail and the command is written when the tail closes, as on ios27. The ios and ios27 traces are unchanged.
Ran locally with Node 24.8.0 and pnpm 11.9.0 on Windows: pnpm run test:pr passes every task (virtual-core 444 passed, 1 skipped; angular-virtual e2e 14/14; marko e2e 80/80; lint, types, build, publint, knip, sherif, docs) except @tanstack/react-virtual:test:e2e. That one cannot start on Windows, because its webServer command sets VITE_SERVER_PORT=… in POSIX syntax. With the same builds and vite preview started from bash, the suite passes 42/42.
Merge Danger
Door: two-way
Blast Radius: absolute commands issued within ~150ms of a touch fling's last frame, on non-iOS touch devices.
For two frames, the scroll element has overflow-y (overflow-x for horizontal lists) set to hidden !important inline, as on iOS 27. CSS or scripts that react to inline style changes on the scroller can see the flip.
Not verified on a device: Firefox and Samsung Internet on Android, Chrome/Edge on desktop touchscreens, and horizontal lists. On an engine whose write already stops the fling, the stop only costs its two frames.
A limitation shared with iOS: the tail opens from a touchend that reaches the scroll element. If the touched row is unmounted before the finger lifts, the event never arrives (the "row removed mid-touch" item in #1307), and no stop happens.
I have tested this code locally with pnpm run test:pr.
🚀 Release Impact
This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Fixed an issue where scroll commands issued during an Android fling could fail to stop the fling, delaying the requested scroll position.
Improved handling when a classic scrollbar changes the scrolling area’s width, helping preserve the expected layout and restore scrolling behavior after the command completes.
…on Android too
Chrome on Android carries a fling on from a programmatic write, so a
scrollToIndex / scrollToOffset / scrollToEnd issued mid-fling was written
and then overshot (Pixel 6, Android 16, Chrome 156: ~3,200px past the
target, 3 runs of 3). iOS 27 already stops the fling before such a command
(TanStack#1332); this does it everywhere a write does not end the fling, which is
everywhere but iOS 26 and earlier.
- IosGesture opens the post-touch tail on every platform. Corrections are
still deferred through it on iOS only; `_canWriteScroll` and
`_awaitingCommandReadBack` keep their isIOSWebKit() gates.
- `_startScroll` stops the fling when momentumOverridesWrites():
!isIOSWebKit() || iosMomentumOverridesWrites().
- `_stopMomentum` puts the overflow back in the same task when hiding it
changed the element's cross-axis client size: a classic scrollbar (a
touchscreen laptop) would vanish and reflow the content for two frames.
The command then waits for the tail, as without a style.
The web trace snapshots move for seeds with touch steps: a command inside
a drag's tail now goes through the stop, which in the simulator (no style)
falls back to the tail, as on ios27.
The change tracks post-touch fling tails on non-iOS platforms and updates scroll commands to stop momentum during a fling. It also checks for cross-axis size changes when hiding overflow and adds Android tests for command timing and overflow restoration.
IosGesture now tracks post-touch tails on non-iOS platforms. Tests check fling-tail state and confirm that non-iOS resize corrections apply immediately.
Scroll commands use momentumOverridesWrites when deciding whether to stop momentum. _stopMomentum checks cross-axis size before completing the overflow-based stop. Android tests cover commands during and outside flings, including classic-scrollbar behavior.

Explanation
The title names the main change: a fix in virtual-core that stops a touch fling when a command is issued during it on Android as well. The raw summary and objectives show the change extends the iOS-only post-touch tail tracking to other platforms where a write does not end the fling. The title is specific and matches the changeset, though it omits the classic-scrollbar handling and the gate that keeps iOS 26 and earlier unchanged, which is acceptable since not every detail must appear. The title is also slightly narrow, since the change applies to all non-iOS platforms, not only Android.

The touch-fling stop skipped iOS through a copy of virtual-core's private

itself, and from 27 virtual-core stops it. That copy could drift from
virtual-core's own check without anyone noticing, and nothing tested the

Matching that PR, hiding the overflow is undone in the same task when it
changes the element's client width: a classic scrollbar on a touchscreen

Add an Android test for a moved scroll that arrives after touchend.
Every Android command test in ios-fling-wait.test.ts sends its moved scroll before touchend. No Android test covers touchend, then a moved scroll inside the tail, then an absolute command. The gesture layer already classifies that ordering as a fling, and its unit test covers it. The added test would cover the Android command path for working behavior. It would not fix a defect.
The reported ordering reaches tail() === 'fling' through the || !ownReadBack upgrade in onScroll. A regression that removes that upgrade fails the existing gesture unit test. A command issued after a tap or with no touch input is written immediately, as the existing tests already assert.
