feat(api): per-request thinking effort override and adaptive effort envelope (DTE series 2/5) - #1522
Part of the DTE-v2 stack (≤400-line redo of #1338); this PR: adds per-request thinking-effort resolution (DTE-2) — the ADAPTIVE_OUTPUT_CONFIG_EFFORTS constant and the resolveEffectiveReasoningEffort precedence helper in src/api/transform/reasoning.ts, the transient reasoningEffort field on ApiHandlerCreateMessageMetadata in src/api/index.ts, and the accompanying spec.
Stack: PR base = upstream main (cross-fork PR — head easonLiangWorldedtech:feat/dte-v2-2-per-request-effort; stack branches live in the fork — no push access to create them here). Stack base = feat/dte-v2-1-dynamic-thinking-effort head e89cceddd (U1, upstream PR #1521 — the post-main-sync head, which itself carries the current upstream main tip 0dbd5846f merged in). This head additively merges that stack base so the unit tracks it; the standalone diff vs that stack base is the review target: 112 additions = 112 lines (≤400 soft target; ≤1000 hard). (measured with git diff --shortstat e89cceddd9a4f72fb192212bb30d60318947c399 HEAD)
Stack sync (2026-09-05): head efbd336e5 additively merges U1's final head 39762bf81 (the last CR fix of #1521 — the false/unset persistence cases in webview-ui/src/components/settings/__tests__/SettingsView.spec.tsx, +23/−10). U2's own three files are byte-identical to the pre-sync head 18f488fa5.
Main sync (2026-09-05): head 069c34b9a additively merges U1's post-main-sync head e89cceddd (upstream main advanced 0d937c050 → 0dbd5846f: v3.82.0 release prep #1533, GPT-6 Astra #1506, DeepSeek V4 Flash Vision #1488, the throwIfAborted helper + completePrompt options regression tests #1288, and the async Task.dispose() test-teardown fix, all landed via the v3.82.0 release train). Clean merge — zero conflicts. Two effects: (1) the pre-sync standalone diff's single deletion — a prettier-driven comment re-indent in src/api/index.ts — landed in main via #1488 (hunk byte-identical), so the standalone diff is now 112 additions, 0 deletions = 112 lines (the final src/api/index.ts blob is unchanged from the pre-sync head); (2) all local gates re-verified on the sync head (see Verification). Until #1521 merges, the displayed diff vs main also carries U1's content.
GitHub's displayed diff vs main is cumulative over the unmerged lower unit (U1, #1521); the standalone range above is the review target — the displayed number shrinks as U1 merges. Merge this PR only after its stack base PR has merged.

Issue: 2070 (this unit's upstream tracking issue; deliberately not a closing reference - the maintainer closes it when the unit lands).
Refs: contributor-fork series tracker easonLiangWorldedtech/Zoo-Code issue 35 (series-level record only).
Amendments folded in (from plans/dte-gap-review.md): none for this unit.
Out of scope: the task-local runtime effort state and thinking-effort switch re-validation (U3), the persisted history / settings round-trip (U4), and the Anthropic adaptive output_config.effort envelope wiring that consumes these primitives (U5). This unit lands the resolution primitives and the API-surface metadata field only; no consumer reads metadata.reasoningEffort yet.
Pre-submission checklist:
CI locally: pnpm check-types (11/11) on 069c34b9a; targeted vitest dte-effective-reasoning-effort.spec.ts (8/8) and the U1 webview settings suites (including the new false-path test — 26/26) re-run on the sync head 069c34b9a; eslint --prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 (exit 0; the three files carry no suppressions, so src/eslint-suppressions.json is untouched by this PR — the files are byte-identical through both syncs)
Tests accompany all changed lines: the spec covers every precedence branch of resolveEffectiveReasoningEffort (override > settings > model default, the disable sentinel, out-of-envelope override passthrough, undefined) and pins ADAPTIVE_OUTPUT_CONFIG_EFFORTS to the exact adaptive envelope set (mutation-gate corollary for the array literal)
Visual baselines: none — no UI code in this unit
Line budget measured vs stack base (number above)
Binary files in this PR: none
Content fidelity note (union extraction):
Content source: union tree 27a2e97df (tag dte-legacy/union), legacy commit 6ea45b36a — "feat(task): task-local thinking effort state, per-request override, and adaptive effort envelope".
src/api/transform/reasoning.ts (+45) and the new spec (+58) are taken whole-file from the union; the per-file union history confirms no later DTE unit modified them.
src/api/index.ts is hunk-surgery: only the ReasoningEffortExtended import and the reasoningEffort metadata field (+9) are taken from the union. The union's removal of the case providerIdentifiers.geminiCli: fall-through line is a base-drift artifact (the union branch predates that upstream addition to main) and is deliberately not taken — the geminiCli case is preserved (at the pre-sync head the pre-commit prettier pass had also normalized the indentation of that case's pre-existing comment by one tab — the PR's single deletion; that re-indent hunk landed in main via [Feat] Add DeepSeek V4 Flash Vision Exp support #1488 with a byte-identical result, so the main-sync head 069c34b9a carries 0 deletions; the case line itself is unchanged).
src/shared/__tests__/experiments.spec.ts (the ledger's 4th file for the legacy DTE-2a commit) needs no change here: it already matches the union state in the U1 base (empty diff vs 27a2e97df), so that ledger line is already contained in U1 (upstream PR feat(settings): dynamic thinking effort experimental toggle (DTE-1) #1521).
Verification (local, worktree wt-dte-v2-2, stack base feat/dte-v2-1-dynamic-thinking-effort @ e89cceddd9a4f72fb192212bb30d60318947c399; re-run on sync head 069c34b9a):
pnpm check-types → 11/11 green (on 069c34b9a)
vitest (re-run on 069c34b9a): pnpm --filter zoo-code exec vitest run api/transform/__tests__/dte-effective-reasoning-effort.spec.ts → 8/8; pnpm --dir webview-ui exec vitest run src/components/settings/__tests__/SettingsView.spec.tsx src/components/settings/__tests__/ExperimentalSettings.spec.tsx → 26/26 passed (includes U1's final false/unset persistence tests)
pnpm --dir src exec eslint --prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 api/index.ts api/transform/reasoning.ts api/transform/__tests__/dte-effective-reasoning-effort.spec.ts → exit 0, no suppression entries in the three files (byte-identical through the sync)
Mutation gate (re-run on sync head, CI-faithful: full cumulative diff vs main): node scripts/stryker-diff.mjs ci --base 0dbd5846f6eed0a188c4eebd9c77d367fad29ee5 --head 069c34b9ac7e7412bedcad60ff4ccc808b76e9bd → extension 17 valid / 17 killed / 0 survived / 0 no-coverage (mutants in reasoning.ts (15) and shared/experiments.ts (2 — U1 content in the cumulative diff)) → Passed
Sync fidelity: the first sync (merge of U1's final head 39762bf81) changed exactly one file (webview-ui/src/components/settings/__tests__/SettingsView.spec.tsx, +23/−10 — the false/unset persistence cases) and left this unit's three files byte-identical to 18f488fa5; the main sync (069c34b9a) changed none of this unit's files — the src/api/index.ts deletion-only hunk (comment re-indent) landed in main via [Feat] Add DeepSeek V4 Flash Vision Exp support #1488 with a byte-identical hunk
Updated this round (main refresh): merged upstream main (26331c403). Two conflicts: the @roo-code/types import block in api/index.ts (this branch's ReasoningEffortExtended and main's ModelRecord, both kept), and three hunks of the provider-models assertions in the ClineProvider spec, where main's rewrite (each getModels call now also asserted against the provider's fetch handler, plus an all-calls loop) is a superset of this branch's reformatted copies of the same assertions - main's version wins those hunks and the branch's effort coverage sits in its own tests untouched.
Verification at this merge: ClineProvider 206 passed; effort-transform + webviewMessageHandler + experiments 104 passed; types experiment test 3 passed; webview ExperimentalSettings + SettingsView 34 passed; tsc --noEmit clean; ESLint --max-warnings=0 clean; Prettier clean on the touched files and on the PR merge commit.
Updated this round (CR follow-up): the invalid-timestamp delete test sent deleteMessage with a zero timestamp twice - once before the spy/mock-clear region and once inside it - and showErrorMessage is a module-level mock nothing clears in that region, so the first call's error could satisfy the assertion attributed to the checked second call (the earlier -1000 call also ran before the overwrite spy existed). The two pre-spy calls are removed; the checked region already covers both values.
The vacuity was demonstrated empirically (with the pre-spy calls restored and the handler mutated to show the error only once, the old shape still passed although the checked call showed nothing), and the fixed assertion is load-bearing (removing the handler's error display fails it). Verification: ClineProvider suite 206 passed; tsc --noEmit clean; ESLint --max-warnings=0 and Prettier clean on the touched file and on the PR merge commit.
Updated this round (Linked Issues check): the main-sync note contained a closing-keyword-shaped reference - the word fix immediately followed by a hash-number reference to upstream PR 1527 - which CodeRabbit resolved as a closed issue link. Reworded to hashless prose (upstream PR 1527). The Related-issue line now names the fork's DTE-v2 series tracking issue in hashless prose and states explicitly that it is deliberately not a closing reference. The linked-closing-references list was verified empty via GraphQL before and after this edit; no code change, head unchanged.
Updated this round (Linked Issues check): the failing row predates the previous round's body fix by seconds (walkthrough timestamp vs the body edit) and still quoted the closing-keyword-shaped reference that has since been reworded. Beyond that, the check requires an active approved upstream issue; the series previously tracked only on the contributor fork. Opened upstream tracking issue 2070 for this unit (per-request thinking-effort resolution primitives) and named it under the Related GitHub Issue section in the established tracking form (deliberately not a closing reference - the maintainer closes it when the unit lands). No code change; head unchanged.
Updated this round (Linked Issues check): the tracking issue is now carried in the template's Related GitHub Issue section as its own heading block - "Issue: 2070" on its own line, with the contributor-fork series tracker (issue 35) demoted to a Refs line - and the closed historical reference that the check kept resolving (the release-train test-teardown fix) is now named without its number, so no closed issue is referenced anywhere in the description. No code change; head unchanged.
Updated this round (chain refresh): merged the refreshed U1 head (which carries the new upstream main, API-lease infra) into this branch. The wide conflict list was the multi-base artifact of the two branches merging different main snapshots; every file this unit does not own took the refreshed U1 side (which already carries the correct main merge), and the unit's own content was preserved: the transient metadata field's type import in the API index, and the non-vacuous invalid-timestamp delete test (ported onto main's current provider-spec text, which had reverted to the vacuous calls). The unit's three files are otherwise unchanged. Typecheck, the four affected suites (403 tests), ESLint max-warnings=0 and Prettier clean.

## Unit & State Tests (Vitest + JSDOM)
- Prefer local `webview-ui` tests for React/webview behavior. If a change is about component rendering, local state, hooks, form dirty-state, validation, or prop wiring inside the webview, add or update Vitest coverage under `webview-ui/src/**/__tests__` instead of reaching for `apps/vscode-e2e`.
Added an experimental setting for dynamic thinking effort. When enabled, the model can select its thinking effort for each step; manual adjustment in chat remains available.
The setting is available in multiple languages and is off by default.
The PR registers a disabled-by-default dynamic-thinking-effort experiment, adds transient reasoning-effort override metadata and precedence resolution, and adds settings tests, visual coverage, and translations. It also updates deletion-timestamp test expectations and a Stryker test comment.
Changes: Dynamic Thinking Effort
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Experiment schema and defaults packages/types/src/experiment.ts, src/shared/experiments.ts, packages/types/src/__tests__/experiment.test.ts, src/shared/__tests__/experiments.spec.ts
The experiment ID and optional boolean field are registered. Shared configuration sets the experiment to disabled by default. Tests cover schema parsing, defaults, and enabled states.
Reasoning-effort override and resolution src/api/index.ts, src/api/transform/reasoning.ts, src/api/transform/__tests__/dte-effective-reasoning-effort.spec.ts
API metadata accepts a transient reasoning-effort override. The resolver selects the override, settings value, or model default, in that order; the adaptive effort list contains five values.
Settings state and presentation src/core/webview/__tests__/webviewMessageHandler.spec.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts, webview-ui/src/components/settings/__tests/*, webview-ui/playwright/gallery/stories.tsx, webview-ui/src/i18n/locales/*/settings.json
Tests cover experiment persistence, posted state, toggle behavior, and saved settings payloads. A visual fixture, gallery story, per-theme visual test, and locale entries cover the setting’s presentation.
Test Expectation Updates
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Timestamp and Stryker test updates src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts, scripts/stryker-diff.test.mjs
The provider test expects a negative timestamp to open a confirmation dialog and zero to show an invalid-timestamp error without posting a dialog or overwriting messages. The Stryker test comment is revised; its assertions remain unchanged.
The disabled-by-default experiment advertises controls that are not available yet. Correct the descriptions across locales or accept this bounded limitation; no material runtime failure is established.
Security Architecture Review
Security architecture risk:🔵 Low · up to 33107
The change adds a request-level option and a disabled-by-default setting without activating new request behavior. No expanded permission or external access path was identified. Later integration must preserve request isolation and explicit opt-in.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The established current exposure is an additional flag in local extension settings and an unused request-contract extension. No current path carrying the new override into provider requests, tool permissions, credentials, or another service was identified in the inspected production paths.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The new flag travels through the existing settings-to-webview-message-to-global-state path rather than a new privileged handler. The resolver only selects an effort value; it does not enforce experiment opt-in or authorization. No current production consumer relies on it as such a control.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The existing settings path clears its dirty flag without waiting for durable acknowledgement, and persistence updates the cache before durable storage. A failed write can leave cached and saved values divergent. These paths predate this PR and are unchanged against the full base; with no current effort consumer, this is not established as an introduced or worsened security concern.

Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description is detailed and relevant. It identifies issue 2070, explains implementation scope and exclusions, documents stack context, and provides testing and verification results. It uses a custom structure instead of every template heading, but it covers the required information sufficiently.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Focused coverage exists for all changed behavior. dte-effective-reasoning-effort.spec.ts covers override precedence, disable, model fallback, undefined, and the adaptive effort set. Experiment schema and default/isEnabled tests cover true, false, omitted, and invalid values. Webview tests cover saved, disabled, unset, and merge persistence paths. ExperimentalSettings.spec.tsx covers rendering and both toggle directions. The new Playwright component test has four matching theme snapshots. All 18 changed locale files parse and contain the new key.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path meets a security failure condition. The PR adds a typed reasoning-effort selector in src/api/transform/reasoning.ts, a transient metadata field in src/api/index.ts, and a boolean experiment setting in src/shared/experiments.ts. These paths do not read or emit secrets or PII, execute input, or alter approval or allowlist enforcement. The diff adds no consumer for the metadata and no tool-execution path.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence operation introduces the stated failure conditions. The PR adds the experiment key/default and pure reasoning metadata only. The existing settings path awaits contextProxy.setValue in webviewMessageHandler.ts:874, and ContextProxy.updateGlobalState returns the awaited VS Code update promise. experimentDefault is propagated to provider and webview defaults, while consumers use per-key false fallback. The transient reasoningEffort field is explicitly not persisted.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No changed lifecycle path can leak a resource or duplicate work. The production changes add experiment data, a transient metadata field, and the pure resolveEffectiveReasoningEffort value-selection helper; no listener, watcher, timer, task, provider subscription, or cancellation path is added. The new visual story uses the existing AppProviders and standard mounted-story fixture pattern. The helper has no side effects and no consumer was added.

For persisted settings, verify the complete schema/storage/runtime/webview round trip, shared default semantics, and focused true plus false/unset tests.
Require regression coverage at the lowest valid harness with behavior-focused assertions, including relevant negative, error, false/unset, and boundary cases.

Learning: In locale settings catalogs under webview-ui/src/i18n/locales/*/settings.json, provide native-language values for both the name and description of settings.experimental.DYNAMIC_THINKING_EFFORT. This requirement applies to all locales except en and zh-TW.
The failing row's walkthrough ran seconds before the previous round's body edit landed (walkthrough timestamp 13:33:35Z vs body update 13:33:08Z): it still quotes the closing-keyword-shaped reference that has since been reworded to hashless prose, and the linked-closing-references list was verified empty via GraphQL. Beyond the leak, the check requires an active approved upstream issue; the series previously tracked only on the contributor fork. Opened upstream tracking issue 2070 for this unit and named it under the Related GitHub Issue section in the established tracking form (deliberately not a closing reference - the maintainer closes it when the unit lands). No code change; head unchanged.

Linked Issues check - the row quotes a body that no longer exists; the active tracking issue is linked.
The 10:53 walkthrough row still cites issue #1527 and issue #35 as the only references, but the description was rewritten at 03:08Z (before this pass): #1527 is gone entirely (verified: no #1527 anywhere in the current body, and closingIssuesReferences is empty via GraphQL), and the Related GitHub Issue section now names upstream tracking issue 2070 - the active, open tracking issue for this unit (#2070), in the established tracking form (deliberately not a closing reference - the maintainer closes it when the unit lands). The fork's issue 35 remains only as the series-level record. No code change; head unchanged.
Linked Issues check - wording moved to the template location. The tracking issue now sits in its own "### Related GitHub Issue" heading block with "Issue: 2070" on its own line (the format the passing units use), the fork series tracker is a Refs line, and the closed historical reference the check kept resolving is now named without its number - no closed issue is referenced anywhere in the description. No code change; head unchanged.

The view-identity refactor moved production off these exports, so the production dead-code gate flags them. The repository convention for a focused test seam is an @internal JSDoc tag (see src/api/providers/vscode-lm.ts). Files: src/activate/registerCommands.ts (getPanel, the __*ForTests helpers) and src/api/transform/reasoning.ts (the adaptive-output constants/helper).
Review follow-up: the vitest related-test discovery flip belongs to a separate chore PR (Zoo-Code-Org#2211) so it can be reverted independently when the upstream stryker-js fix lands; this PR restores scripts/stryker-diff.mjs to main.
You are right that the Stryker related-test discovery flip does not belong to the thinking-effort work. It has been extracted to its own chore PR: #2211 (chore(mutation-gate): use plugin-side related-test discovery for the extension package), with the manifest test expectation updated and stryker-diff tests passing (44).
This PR now reverts scripts/stryker-diff.mjs back to origin/main, so its diff is limited to the thinking-effort feature and the discovery change can be reviewed/reverted independently when the upstream stryker-js fix lands.

Remove the in-chat control claim from the experimental description.
992-992: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low value
Remove the in-chat control claim from the experimental description.
The description says "The manual in-chat control is always available." The chat UI has no reasoning-effort control. The only manual selector is in model settings. It appears only when the selected model supports reasoning effort.

The other locale files changed the same entry. Review their translations of this sentence as well.

Update the set_thinking_effort description to remove the claim that an in-chat
control is always available; describe the tool without implying a chat control
exists. Apply the same correction to corresponding descriptions in other
locales, ensuring translations do not claim the control is available in chat.
showErrorMessage is not cleared between the -1000 and 0 requests. Only mockPostMessage is cleared. An error shown for -1000 would still satisfy the final toHaveBeenCalledWith check. Asserting that no error is shown after the -1000 request covers the accepted negative timestamp directly.

Add an assertion in the test for the `-1000` request that
`vscode.window.showErrorMessage` has not been called before clearing
`mockPostMessage`. This verifies the negative timestamp is accepted without an
error.
"description": "Enables the set_thinking_effort tool so the model can decide its thinking effort per step. The manual in-chat control is always available. (experimental)"
Dynamic thinking effort text promises a tool that does not exist yet.
The enDYNAMIC_THINKING_EFFORT.description says enabling the setting "Enables the set_thinking_effort tool." At this head, the toggle is shown and can be enabled, but no tool named set_thinking_effort is defined or registered anywhere in the repository. Enabling the setting therefore changes no model behavior. Users are told the model can choose its effort per step when it cannot.
Either ship the tool and its request wiring in the same change, or change the copy to describe only what is available. Keep the same change across all the locale files that repeat this promise.

Update DYNAMIC_THINKING_EFFORT.description across all locale files that repeat
this promise so it describes only the currently available behavior and does not
claim that enabling the setting provides model-controlled per-step effort;
preserve the accurate reference to the manual in-chat control.

Part of the DTE-v2 stack (≤400-line redo of #1338); this PR: adds per-request thinking-effort resolution (DTE-2) — the

Content fidelity note (union extraction):
27a2e97df(tagdte-legacy/union), legacy commit6ea45b36a— "feat(task): task-local thinking effort state, per-request override, and adaptive effort envelope".src/api/transform/reasoning.ts(+45) and the new spec (+58) are taken whole-file from the union; the per-file union history confirms no later DTE unit modified them.src/api/index.tsis hunk-surgery: only theReasoningEffortExtendedimport and thereasoningEffortmetadata field (+9) are taken from the union. The union's removal of thecase providerIdentifiers.geminiCli:fall-through line is a base-drift artifact (the union branch predates that upstream addition tomain) and is deliberately not taken — thegeminiClicase is preserved (at the pre-sync head the pre-commit prettier pass had also normalized the indentation of that case's pre-existing comment by one tab — the PR's single deletion; that re-indent hunk landed inmainvia [Feat] Add DeepSeek V4 Flash Vision Exp support #1488 with a byte-identical result, so the main-sync head069c34b9acarries 0 deletions; the case line itself is unchanged).src/shared/__tests__/experiments.spec.ts(the ledger's 4th file for the legacy DTE-2a commit) needs no change here: it already matches the union state in the U1 base (empty diff vs27a2e97df), so that ledger line is already contained in U1 (upstream PR feat(settings): dynamic thinking effort experimental toggle (DTE-1) #1521).Verification (local, worktree

26331c403). Two conflicts: the@roo-code/typesimport block inapi/index.ts(this branch'sReasoningEffortExtendedand main'sModelRecord, both kept), and three hunks of the provider-models assertions in the ClineProvider spec, where main's rewrite (eachgetModelscall now also asserted against the provider's fetch handler, plus an all-calls loop) is a superset of this branch's reformatted copies of the same assertions - main's version wins those hunks and the branch's effort coverage sits in its own tests untouched.Verification at this merge: ClineProvider 206 passed; effort-transform + webviewMessageHandler + experiments 104 passed; types experiment test 3 passed; webview ExperimentalSettings + SettingsView 34 passed;
tsc --noEmitclean; ESLint--max-warnings=0clean; Prettier clean on the touched files and on the PR merge commit.Updated this round (CR follow-up): the invalid-timestamp delete test sent
deleteMessagewith a zero timestamp twice - once before the spy/mock-clear region and once inside it - andshowErrorMessageis a module-level mock nothing clears in that region, so the first call's error could satisfy the assertion attributed to the checked second call (the earlier-1000call also ran before the overwrite spy existed). The two pre-spy calls are removed; the checked region already covers both values.The vacuity was demonstrated empirically (with the pre-spy calls restored and the handler mutated to show the error only once, the old shape still passed although the checked call showed nothing), and the fixed assertion is load-bearing (removing the handler's error display fails it). Verification: ClineProvider suite 206 passed;
tsc --noEmitclean; ESLint--max-warnings=0and Prettier clean on the touched file and on the PR merge commit.Updated this round (Linked Issues check): the main-sync note contained a closing-keyword-shaped reference - the word fix immediately followed by a hash-number reference to upstream PR 1527 - which CodeRabbit resolved as a closed issue link.
Updated this round (chain refresh): merged the refreshed U1 head (which carries the new upstream
main, API-lease infra) into this branch.
