feat(core-ai): segment and track objects through videos - #303
Stacked on #302. Stack for #237: #299 → #300 → #301 → #302 → #303 → #309 → #312 (docs). The review's cache findings are addressed: the segmenter last used stays loaded and switching models releases it, concurrent calls share one load, and the hosted SAM 3 video repository now holds the bundle.
Wraps Apple's CoreAIVideoSegmentation product (coreai-models 1.0), which had no wrapper. Part of #237.
What changes
CoreAI.runTask('video-segmentation', config, { videoUri, data: { prompts } }, options) (or one prompt in input.text). It finds the objects the prompts describe and tracks them through the video. The AI SDK has no segmentation or tracking primitive, so this stays a native API, like image segmentation.
Output: output.frames[i].objects, each with id (stable across frames), prompt, score and box.
includeMasks: true adds each object's mask as a base64 PNG, white on transparent like image segmentation masks.
outputVideo: true also writes a copy with the masks and boxes drawn on, and returns its file:// URL.
Options: maxFrames, scoreThreshold, newObjectThreshold and maxObjects, which map to VideoSegmentationParameters.
Packaging: the new video-segmentation task links CoreAIVideoSegmentation (podspec default list, Expo plugin tasks, getCapabilities().isCoreAIVideoSegmentationAvailable). The segmenter stays loaded by path.
The example app links the task and type-checks core-ai from source.
Model
grabbou/sam3-video-CoreAI, folder sam3-video/ (1.6 GB, iOS and macOS): SAM 3 exported with Apple's recipe at 672 px, uv run models/sam3_video/export.py --dtype float16 --image-size 672.
Resolution: 672 px balances speed and accuracy on iPhone. The recipe's default 1008 px is slower, and 336 px misses small objects.
License: SAM 3 is gated. The SAM License allows redistributing derivatives under the same agreement with a copy included, so the repository ships LICENSE and a license: other card that links Meta's terms.
Testing
On iPhone 17 Pro (iOS 27):
harness/core-ai/video-segmentation.device.harness.ts: 4/4 pass on a 2 s, 8 fps, 240×240 pan across the cats fixture (13 KB). It covers cats tracked in all 16 frames, the same ids at the end as at the start, maxFrames with 240×240 PNG masks, and the annotated MP4
availability (now checking isCoreAIVideoSegmentationAvailable) and the image vision tests pass on the same build (7/7)
Adds video segmentation as a Core AI task. The change includes public types, native iOS and macOS execution, task linking, documentation, and device harness coverage for frame results, masks, and annotated video output.
The task types add video input, options, output, and an availability flag. Task linking maps the task to CoreAIVideoSegmentation. The example configuration and documentation include the task.
Native execution and output packages/core-ai/ios/CoreAIImpl.swift, packages/core-ai/ios/CoreAIVideoSegmentation.swift
The native bridge reports availability and dispatches video segmentation on supported systems. The implementation validates input, loads and caches segmenters, returns serialized frame data, and supports optional masks and annotated video output.
Device setup and validation harness/fixtures.ts, harness/core-ai/*
The harness adds a video fixture and model setup. Device tests check availability, frame indices, detected prompts, object IDs, frame limits, mask output, and annotated video output.

Loading
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 8bf2c
Video segmentation models stay in memory for the life of the app process, which can exhaust memory when an app switches models. The device harness cannot fetch its model on a fresh device from the configured repository, so the new tests cannot run there. Both should be addressed or explicitly accepted before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 8bf2c
The new on-device task operates within the host application's existing authority. The main risks are incomplete resource ownership and cleanup after failed video processing, rather than a demonstrated expansion of access or privileges.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: The new static cache retains segmenters by filesystem path without eviction or integration with unloadModel or removeModel. Initialization occurs outside the dictionary lock, so concurrent misses can also construct duplicate segmenters. Although warm retention is documented and dictionary access is synchronized, resource release and same-path replacement are outside the existing lifecycle controls. Repeated bundle paths can therefore accumulate retained instances, and replacement can reuse an earlier instance, weakening host-application failure containment and recovery.
Low · security · inferred: Annotated-video rendering creates a temporary media copy before the wrapper checks collected serialization failures. With mask output enabled, a serialization failure can cause rejection after rendering completes, without returning the destination or deleting it. This introduces a potential residual-media lifecycle gap inside the application's storage. The wrapper's missing cleanup is observed; actual retention and access by another principal are not established, and native cleanup behavior remains unknown.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated scope is the host application's readable model and video files, temporary media, and process resources. Triggering the path requires application code to invoke the native task. The inspected evidence does not establish cross-tenant exposure, credential access, or elevated privileges.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A conditional privacy path exists when annotated rendering writes media and frame serialization subsequently fails: the request rejects without handing back the destination, and wrapper cleanup does not remove it. This is a local retention concern, not verified disclosure to another principal. Native cleanup guarantees remain unresolved.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The application-to-native boundary accepts configuration, video paths, prompts, and options. Product and OS checks gate execution, while basic input checks reject missing video locations or prompts. Model-source resolution is unchanged from the comparison base; the PR adds another consumer rather than a new source-authority mechanism.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Optional frame limits and mask output let callers reduce work, but the wrapper accumulates all returned frames and retains segmenters across calls. Without bounded cache ownership or a video cancellation handle, recovery from excessive application-local resource use depends on caller discipline and unavailable native lifecycle guarantees.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Give cached segmenters explicit bounded ownership, coalesce concurrent initialization, and define invalidation for bundle removal or replacement. Confirm native concurrent-use guarantees before sharing instances across requests.
proposed — Keep ownership of the temporary destination until successful result handoff, deleting it on every unsuccessful terminal path. Document ownership of successful outputs and define cancellation behavior for long-running video processing.

CoreAI.runTask starts an asynchronous native task for each call. Direct calls can therefore miss segmenters[url.path] concurrently and initialize duplicate VideoSegmenter instances. This causes duplicate model work and a transient memory peak.
Cache an in-flight Task per path and await it. Treat this as a performance refactor rather than a demonstrated out-of-memory failure; sibling image tasks use the same per-call loading pattern.

Preserve reuse of the successfully loaded segmenter for subsequent calls.
