fix(daemon): a start that fails at the socket claim exits - #1077
A daemon whose start fails at the socket claim, or at the admin.token write, logged "Daemon failed to start" but never exited. Nothing stops CleanupReaper's timer except stop(), which a failed start never reached. #1051 reports the result: repeated starts leave node.exe processes running.
A failed claim or token write now cleans up in #stop's order, answers parked requests with DAEMON_STARTUP_FAILED, and rejects. A start that loses the claim to a live daemon leaves its drivers alone.
A daemon.stop already running is the one teardown. The start rejects at once, and startDaemon waits for that stop before it rejects, so the entry's process.exit cannot cut the teardown short.
Verified: a refused listen exits 1 in about 1 s, for worker and gateway. Tests pin these, each with a bound so a hang fails instead of stalling:
a failed start leaves no timer;
the lost race disposes nothing;
a stop during a failed start tears down once and settles.
A start that failed at the socket claim or the admin.token write threw
out of DaemonServer.start without releasing what the composition had
built. The CleanupReaper arms its tick in its constructor, so that timer
(and any driver child) kept the node process alive after "Daemon failed
to start" was logged. On Windows every start fails this way (listen on
daemon.sock is EACCES), so a scheduled `simlock daemon start` piled up
live daemon processes (callstackincubator#1051).
The failed start now writes DAEMON_STARTUP_FAILED to parked requests,
then runs #stop's disposal order (engine, settle, dispose, connections,
a claimed socket) without daemon.stopping or the admin.token removal.
A start that lost the claim to a live daemon skips settle and dispose,
since its drivers may have adopted that daemon's adb server. The entry
exits after logging either outcome.

Walkthrough
Startup failures during socket claiming or admin.token writes now reject readiness and run cleanup, unless an accepted daemon.stop already owns teardown. Failed-start cleanup handles DaemonAlreadyRunningError differently from other failures. Worker and gateway startup callers await stop before rethrowing the original error. The executable entrypoint calls process.exit after logging startup errors. Tests and documentation cover these paths.
Suggested reviewers:v3ron
Priority: Normal
Merge Risk: Low · up to 7b65f
The change is mergeable with owner awareness: an exceptional cleanup failure may leave a claimed socket open, and the parked-relay test may be intermittent on slow runners.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 7b65f
The change improves failed-start cleanup without weakening administrator checks or adding commands. Ownership and concurrent shutdown are explicitly handled. Cleanup operations can still interrupt later resource release if they fail, so complete teardown is not guaranteed in every failure case.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The changed cleanup acts on the failed daemon attempt's engine, composition resources and connections. A losing claim skips driver disposal, and endpoint-host ownership checks prevent that attempt's stop from removing the winner's endpoint. The inspected path does not add cross-daemon authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Socket credentials still determine administrative authority: a credential-free hello receives the agent role, while operator or per-process admin credentials can resolve to admin. The socket stop command still requires the admin role even during startup or protocol mismatch. These controls are unchanged by the PR.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The inspected tests assert no remaining fake-clock timers after early startup failures, preservation of shared drivers after a lost claim, and one completed teardown before worker or gateway startup rejects after a concurrent stop. Relay tests also assert terminal startup-failure responses and channel abortion. The routed public-entrypoint classes are local test doubles, not new production entrypoints.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Consider failure-isolated finalization for resources owned by the stopping attempt, with rejection-injection tests for settle, composition disposal and connection closure. Preserve the losing-claim ownership exception and credential-removal ordering rather than applying unconditional cleanup.

A daemon.stop accepted after the socket claim but before the admin.token
write failed made the start's catch overwrite the stop's promise with a
second release, disposing the drivers twice. The failed start now waits
for a stop already running and rejects with its own error.

…aits for it
Waiting for a daemon.stop accepted after the claim deadlocked when the
admin.token write then failed: both roles' stopAuxiliary waits for the
HTTP frontend's start, which only the start settling releases. The
start now rejects at once and startDaemon waits for that stop before it
rejects, so the entry's process.exit still follows the one teardown.

Release the endpoint in finally when failed-start cleanup throws.
#releaseFailedStart runs #disposeEngine, settle, dispose, #closeConnections and host.stop() in one try block. If an earlier step throws, the catch logs the error and host.stop() never runs. The worker dispose can throw, for example from eventHistory.stop() or state.close().
On an admin.token write failure, the socket is already claimed. A skipped host.stop() leaves the listener open and the socket file on disk. The process stays alive with nothing to serve until the entry's process.exit runs, and embedders and tests never get that exit. #stop already handles this case: it calls host.stop() in a finally. Use the same structure here so every outcome releases the endpoint, and keep the "never rejects" contract.

try {
await this.#disposeEngine();

} catch (releaseError: unknown) {

});

Wait for relay parking before triggering startup failure.
openRelay starts the request without awaiting its transport write. The fixed sleep(100) does not prove that the worker reached awaitReady. If startup fails first, the relay can receive DAEMON_STOPPING or a closed connection instead of DAEMON_STARTUP_FAILED.
Use a bounded wait on an observable signal that proves the request reached the startup gate. Use the same signal for both convergence and socket-claim cases.
