feat(input): rotate a leased iOS simulator with 0x07 - #1081
A lease holder can now rotate a leased iOS simulator with a real device-orientation event. On the lease's input socket, serve-sim's 0x07 message (portrait, portrait_upside_down, landscape_left, landscape_right) now reaches the helper, which sends it through HIDInjector.sendOrientation (a GSEvent through PurpleWorkspacePort). An unknown name is dropped, as serve-sim does. Android and physical iPhones still drop 0x07. 0x82 stays portrait, and touches stay in the native frame.
Verified with Simulator.app not running, on a leased iPhone 17: on Xcode 26.4 with an iOS 26.4 runtime, and on Xcode 27.0 with iOS 26.4 and iOS 27.0 runtimes. After a rotation, a tap landed on the control drawn there (#1080).
ADR: adds ADR 0052, accepted by the maintainer, which narrows ADR 0049 §3 on iOS simulators; 0049's status points at it.
One maintainer-run review, not the blind reviewer agents, plus a hardware check: review comment.
claims (fixed in 7ca4150): the ADR, the iOS manual and the website said Xcode 27 may not rotate; it rotated on Xcode 27.0 with iOS 26.4 and 27.0 runtimes.
code note (fixed in 579c887): the missing-port error said Simulator.app must be running.
spec note: ADR 0052 was Proposed; the maintainer accepted it (7ca4150).
The input socket now takes expo serve-sim's 0x07 {"orientation"} with one
of its four names; another name stays dropped. An iOS simulator's device
input forwards it to the helper's --input mode, which sends serve-sim's
GSEvent through PurpleWorkspacePort (seen to rotate on Xcode 26.4 with an
iOS 26.4 runtime, Simulator.app not running; on Xcode 27 it may do
nothing). Android and physical iPhones keep dropping it, and 0x82 keeps
saying portrait. ADR 0052 (proposed) narrows ADR 0049 section 3.

Walkthrough
The input protocol adds orientation messages with four accepted names and rejects other values. iOS simulators forward recognized orientations to the helper as GSEvents, which maps them to HIDInjector values. On Xcode 27, the simulator may not rotate and the client receives no indication. Android and physical iPhones continue to drop rotation input.

Priority: Pending latest changes
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 579c8
The PR still has an accepted-ADR conflict, hides orientation-send failures, and omits required vendored inventory updates; resolve these before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 579c8
Rotation remains scoped to the lease-selected simulator, and unsupported devices remain excluded. No new security vulnerability was established. Runtime-dependent completion and the unresolved accepted-design exception leave limited architecture uncertainty.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated new authority is rotation of the lease-selected iOS simulator by a requester already authorized for its input. The inspected path does not expose worker-wide device selection, physical-iPhone input, or Android rotation. Complete isolation still depends on inherited relay admission and leasing invariants that were not fully verified.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — End-user lease authorization occurs before input dispatch. On the relay path, the worker input target checks lease existence but does not independently compare the forwarded tenant with the lease owner; it inherits trust in the gateway connection. This trust arrangement is unchanged by the PR, rather than a newly introduced bypass.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — One input instance is shared within a lease. Lease end, last-socket departure, and helper failure use the existing release paths, with helper close guarded against repetition. Orientation messages are written as complete frames to the same stdin stream and awaited by the helper loop. These controls manage input authority and process cleanup; they do not confirm guest rotation or restore a prior orientation.

Resolve the accepted ADR before enabling rotation.
ADR 0049 requires 0x07 to be dropped on every platform. ADR 0052 is still proposed, so it does not yet replace that requirement. Obtain the decision and update the ADR status and index, or keep dropping these messages until the decision is accepted. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Forward failed orientation sends to the daemon log.
102-102: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Forward failed orientation sends to the daemon log.
When sendOrientation fails, this writes only to the helper’s stderr. createIosDeviceInput supplies no onStderrLine callback, so NodeBytePipeLauncher discards the message. The rotation then fails without a client or operator diagnostic. Forward the helper’s error lines to the driver logger. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update createIosDeviceInput to provide an onStderrLine callback that forwards
helper error lines to the driver logger, so failures from
InputMode.sendOrientation are visible to clients and operators.

Tested on a Mac with Xcode 27.0 (27A266a), with Simulator.app not running. Rotation works. I built the PR's helper, booted an iPhone 17 in a separate device set, opened Safari, sent the four 0x07 names through simlock-screen-capture <udid> --input and took a screenshot after each.

Findings
The Xcode 27 warning doesn't match what I saw. The PR says that on Xcode 27 the send may succeed without the simulator turning (iOS simulator input on Xcode 27: hardware keys, app switcher, Lock and rotation #1024). On Xcode 27.0 the simulator turned on both runtimes. A guess: the 2026-10-26 test behind ADR 0049 looked at the home screen, which never rotates on an iPhone (on the home screen only a notification banner turned). Please drop or soften the warning in ADR 0052 (Context, Decision 2, Consequences), in src/drivers/ios/AGENTS.md (Known gaps) and on watching-the-screen.mdx.
Minor, existing code: in HIDInjector.swift, the error for a missing PurpleWorkspacePort says "Simulator.app must be running". It doesn't need to be.
Not tested yet: the TypeScript tests haven't run here; CI is waiting for approval. I also tested the helper on its own, not the full path through the daemon's input socket.
The diff reads correctly: 0x07 is parsed only for the four names, the iOS driver forwards it, Android drops it, and 0x82 stays portrait.
…running
A simulator with no Simulator.app rotates through PurpleWorkspacePort (callstackincubator#1080),
so a missing port points at the simulator, not at Simulator.app. The vendored
file's header and NOTICE.md deviation 3 name the change.

Rotation was checked on Xcode 27.0 with iOS 26.4 and 27.0 runtimes, with no
Simulator.app, so the ADR, the iOS driver manual and the website page no
longer say Xcode 27 may not turn the simulator. ADR 0049's status points at
0052.
