Closes #639

Status

Built and pushed; all hooks passed on the final push. Android and daemon unit tests green except 9 pre-existing worker-flag failures (dispatcher.test.ts, server.test.ts: invalid execArgv flags: --experimental-transform-types, local Node version).

Done when

 • Emulators launch with -grpc <console port + 3000> -grpc-use-token, so the gRPC endpoint and avd/running/pid_*.ini (with grpc.token) exist (src/drivers/android/index.ts #startEmulator; test "cold boots without loading or automatically saving snapshots")
 • The gRPC port cannot collide between parallel leases (console ports 5586-5682 map to 8586-8682, one per console; test "puts the gRPC endpoint at the reserved console port plus 3000")
 • A console port whose gRPC port (+3000) is already listening is skipped, like a busy console or adb port (consolePortsInUse; test "skips a console port when something listens on its gRPC port …")

Verified on hardware

macOS (Apple silicon), Android emulator 36.5.11.0, system image android-37.0 arm64-v8a:

 • Before (main's arguments, -port 5586 -no-snapshot-save): the emulator boots, but writes no avd/running/pid_*.ini and listens on no gRPC port.
 • After (this branch's arguments): pid_*.ini has grpc.port=8586 and a grpc.token, and the emulator listens on 127.0.0.1:8586.
 • End to end: this branch's daemon (isolated SIMLOCK_HOME) granted simlock lease --platform android on emulator-5586. The leased emulator's cmdline carries -grpc 8586 -grpc-use-token, and its pid_*.ini has grpc.port=8586 and a token.

Assumptions

 • Assumption: the optional "expose the gRPC port in the grant" is out of scope — the issue marks it optional and it changes the public surface.
 • Assumption: where the gRPC flags go in the launch args — after -no-snapshot-save and before the configured flags and launch args, so the fixed Simlock flags stay together and a configured flag still comes last.

Walkthrough

Android emulator launches now set the gRPC endpoint port to the console port plus the configured offset and enable token authentication. Launch tests expect these arguments across cold boots, restarts, recovery, and other launch scenarios. The documentation describes the gRPC port configuration.

Suggested reviewers: v3ron

Priority: Pending latest changes

Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: Low · up to 4f224

A port collision may prevent the gRPC endpoint from working or the emulator from starting. Merge requires awareness of this bounded risk.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 4f224

The new endpoint explicitly requests token authentication, and its port is derived from the emulator’s assigned console port rather than caller input. No authentication bypass or credential disclosure was demonstrated. Binding scope, token-file protection, and failure behavior remain dependent on the emulator and have not been fully verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

 • inferred — The added control surface is an emulator-process endpoint on the daemon host. Its intended access boundary depends on listener binding and possession of the emulator-generated token. The available evidence does not establish remote reachability or a cross-tenant authority expansion.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

 • observed — Readiness verifies that the emulator answering on the adb serial reports the expected AVD directory. Destructive operations separately recheck ownership and fail closed on unreadable identity. These existing controls counter cross-device adb mutation, but do not authenticate the new gRPC listener or associate its token with that process.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

 • observed — Allocation checks the console/adb port pair, not console port plus 3000. Readiness checks adb boot state and AVD identity, not gRPC availability or authentication. Readiness failure triggers SIGKILL and a bounded exit wait. These mechanisms predate the new endpoint; the added dependency makes gRPC bind-failure behavior relevant, but does not by itself demonstrate authentication fallback, endpoint substitution, or stranded insecure state.

Hardening Proposals

 • proposed — Validate supported emulator versions for loopback binding, rejection of unauthenticated requests, token-file ownership and permissions, and fail-closed behavior when the requested port or token initialization is unavailable. Use those results to determine whether explicit endpoint validation or additional lifecycle controls are necessary.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(android): start emulators with an authenticated gRPC endpoint" matches the main change. The changeset adds -grpc <console port + 3000> -grpc-use-token to Android emulator launch arguments in src/drivers/android/index.ts, and the tests and the AGENTS.md file cover the same change. The title is specific and follows a conventional commit style.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #639 directly links one active coding requirement. Android emulators started by Simlock must expose an authenticated gRPC endpoint at console port + 3000 and write a discovery file with grpc.token. The proposed fix is -grpc <console port + 3000> -grpc-use-token.

The whole-PR diff (merge base to head) confirms the implementation:

 • src/drivers/android/index.ts adds GRPC_PORT_OFFSET = 3000 with a why: comment. The comment states the port is per-console and unique per lease (8586-8682 for 5586-5682).
 • The emulator launch args add "-grpc", String(data.port + GRPC_PORT_OFFSET), "-grpc-use-token" after -no-snapshot-save and before ...this.#emulatorFlags and ...launchArgs.

Because the port maps one-to-one from console port, parallel leases do not share a gRPC port. This meets the issue's 'so parallel leases never collide' requirement.

src/drivers/android/index.test.ts covers the behavior. The new test 'puts the gRPC endpoint at the reserved console port plus 3000' asserts -grpc 8588 -grpc-use-token for console port 5588. Other expectations for cold boot, snapshot restore, wipe, recovery, and scripted launches assert the new args.

The issue calls the port-clear check a 'may be worth checking' consideration, not a requirement. The PR omits that check and states the reason: no other Simlock component uses 8586-8682. I did not independently verify that claim. It does not change the verdict, because the issue does not make the check mandatory.

The optional grant field is not a required objective. Its absence does not fail this assessment.

The previous PASS conclusion holds. It is now confirmed from the whole-PR diff, not carried forward.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Every changed area maps to issue #639:

 • src/drivers/android/index.ts: adds GRPC_PORT_OFFSET and the -grpc and -grpc-use-token launch args. This is the required behavior.
 • src/drivers/android/index.test.ts, src/daemon/main.test.ts, src/drivers/android/physical-handler.test.ts: update launch expectations for the new args and add a test for the console-port-plus-3000 mapping. These tests support the required behavior.
 • src/drivers/android/AGENTS.md: documents the same launch behavior.

The diff adds no public grant field, no new raw emulator flag in config, and no unrelated product behavior. The change summary reports no changes to exported or public declarations.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 4 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Roll over pre-upgrade emulators safely.

After an upgrade, startup reattaches running emulators, and the planner can grant an already-ready device without launching it again. Those emulators retain their old arguments and can remain in the warm pool without a gRPC endpoint. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Arrange a safe rollover of old emulators before they are granted again. Do not interrupt active leases.

As per coding guidelines, “A stop releases nothing. Leases stay in state.db with their deadlines.”

Check the derived gRPC port before accepting this launch contract.

These assertions verify the new flags, but they do not verify port availability. The allocator checks the console port and its adjacent adb port only. It does not check consolePort + GRPC_PORT_OFFSET. A listener on 8586 therefore does not make allocation skip console port 5586. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the allocator to check the derived gRPC port. Add a regression test that makes 8586 busy and expects the next console port, 5588. The issue decision requires this check. (github.com)

Rebased onto main, where callstackincubator#1083 starts every emulator with -grpc. The
hardwareKeyboard launch tests now expect those flags, and the manual's
keyboard lines are folded so it stays within its 150-line budget.
