fix: resolve aliased dependencies against the aliased package - #3298
npm aliases like "vite": "npm:@voidzero-dev/vite-plus-core@1.0.0-rc.1" were resolved against the package named by the dependency key instead of the aliased package. vite-plus aliases vite to @voidzero-dev/vite-plus-core, and since vite has an old 1.0.0-rc.1 release, vite-plus rc.1 was picking up old Vite's whole dependency tree. That's where the extra vulnerabilities, deprecations and +262 dependencies came from. Made with Claude Code, reviewed by myself.
📚 Description
resolveDependencyTree now uses the existing parseDependencyVersion helper to get the real package name for npm: aliases in both dependencies and optionalDependencies, so it fetches and resolves the aliased package. resolveVersion is unchanged.
Before and after, resolved against the live registry:
vite-plus
before
after
1.0.0-rc.0
73 packages (vite-plus-core missing)
90 packages
1.0.0-rc.1
334 packages, 6 deprecated
90 packages, 0 deprecated
So rc.0 was undercounting too: vite has no 1.0.0-rc.0, so the alias was silently dropped.
I added a unit test that fails without this change. All unit tests and vue-tsc pass locally, and lint and format are clean on the changed files.

Bug Fixes
Dependency resolution now recognises npm aliases using the package name and version specified in the alias, rather than treating the alias key as the package name.
This applies to required and optional dependencies; optional aliases retain their optional status. The original alias keys are no longer fetched as package names.
Dependency resolution now uses package names parsed from dependency ranges, including npm aliases. A test verifies that required and optional aliases resolve under their aliased package names.
Required and optional dependencies use the package name parsed from the range when available, with the dependency key as a fallback. The test checks alias resolution, resolved versions and optional status.

Before / after behavior
observed — Modified behavior in server/utils/dependency-resolver.ts: Adds the parseDependencyVersion import used to determine dependency names from ranges.
observed — Modified behavior in server/utils/dependency-resolver.ts: Dependency collection now parses each range and uses its package name when available, instead of always using the dependency key; the dependency key remains the fallback.
observed — Modified behavior in server/utils/dependency-resolver.ts: Optional dependency collection now uses the parsed range package name when available, falling back to the dependency key as in regular dependency collection.
observed — Modified behavior in test/unit/server/utils/dependency-resolver.spec.ts: Adds a test where vite aliases @scope/vite-fork at ^1.0.0 and optional fsevents aliases fsevents-fork at 2.0.0. It expects the resolved tree to contain the two aliased packages and root, marks fsevents-fork as optional, and checks that neither original dependency key is fetched.

Explanation
Issue #3294 requires npm aliases to use the aliased package name when metadata is fetched. resolveDependencyTree now parses each alias in both dependencies and optionalDependencies, then fetches the parsed package name and resolves its version from that packument. The added unit test covers required and optional aliases and confirms that the original dependency keys are not fetched.

The source change is limited to alias handling in dependency-tree traversal. The test change verifies the required and optional alias behaviour. Both changes support issue #3294, and no unrelated change is evident.

Preserve distinct version requests for the same aliased package.
When two dependency entries alias the same package with different ranges, the name-only nextLevel and seen keys discard the later request. The resolver can omit that version and its dependency tree. The optional dependency loop has the same issue.
Name-only deduplication already existed for non-aliased dependencies before this change. The alias handling change makes the same limitation reachable for aliased dependencies.
Key pending and visited requests by package name and effective version constraint. Keep the package name used for fetching separate from this identity key. Continue to deduplicate resolved results by package name and resolved version.

@gameroman I would separate the request identity from the package name used for fetching. This lets react@^17 and react@^18 remain separate requests.
In server/utils/dependency-resolver.ts, I would make these changes.
1. Store the package name in each request
Use a composite key for both pending and visited requests:
typeDependencyRequest={name: stringrange: stringoptional: booleanpath: string[]}functionrequestKey(name: string,range: string): string{// Match the alias-range extraction used by resolveVersion.if(range.startsWith('npm:')){constatIndex=range.lastIndexOf('@')if(atIndex>4){range=range.slice(atIndex+1)}}returnJSON.stringify([name,range])}
2. Use request keys for traversal, but fetch by package name
Inside the while loop:
constnextLevel=newMap<string,DependencyRequest>()for(constkeyofcurrentLevel.keys()){seen.add(key)}constentries=[...currentLevel.values()]awaitmapWithConcurrency(entries,async({ name, range, optional, path })=>{constpackument=awaitfetchPackument(name)// Keep the existing version resolution and result construction.
Keep the existing resolved-result key unchanged:
constkey=`${name}@${version}`
This ensures that different ranges can resolve independently, while results that resolve to the same package version still share one result entry.
Use the same change for optionalDependencies, with optional: true.
I would validate this with regression cases for:
Two aliases requesting different versions of the same package, including each version’s transitive dependencies.
A later dependency requesting another version of an already visited package.
Different ranges resolving to the same version, which must produce one result.
A dependency cycle, which must still terminate.
This keeps resolveVersion unchanged and preserves the existing breadth-first depth tracking. The snippets are a proposed change; I have not applied or tested them.

Agreed: name-only deduplication predates this PR. The follow-up can address that limitation separately from #3298.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
This was not introduced by this PR and I think we should track this in another issue instead. @coderabbitai, can you do this?
@trueberryless I think that is because you could not have 2 dependencies with the same name as they had to be unique, but with aliases you can have the same package with 2 different versions, so it is partially introduced by this PR
Before this PR, those entries had separate traversal keys, although the resolver fetched the wrong package names. With this PR, both entries use react as the traversal key. The nextLevel.has(depName) check then discards the second request.
The distinction is:
Existing limitation: different parent packages can request different versions of the same non-aliased dependency, and name-only deduplication loses one request.
New alias-specific collision: this PR maps distinct alias keys to the same target name without preserving their different version constraints.
So “partially introduced by this PR” is accurate. #3384 tracks the broader fix, but moving the work to that issue does not make the alias-specific finding inapplicable here.
The dependency tree fetched the packument for the dependency key and
resolved the alias range against it. For `vite: npm:@voidzero-dev/vite-plus-core@1.0.0-rc.1`
that matched the unrelated vite@1.0.0-rc.1, pulling its whole tree into
vite-plus's vulnerability, deprecation and install size results.

Upgrade a queued optional target when a required dependency requests it.
An optional alias and a required dependency can resolve to the same target. The first queued request sets the flag. If the optional request is queued first, the target stays optional: true, and a failed libc lookup then drops it from the install size results. A required request should clear the flag on the queued entry.
