📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Package comparisons recognise version-specific entries, use package names for replacement suggestions and prevent another version of a selected package appearing as a duplicate.
    • Version comparisons display relevant facets, start with dependency comparisons and show trend charts when at least two distinct packages are compared.
  • Improvements
    • Chart labels include package versions where available, are shortened less aggressively and retain consistent framework colours across versions of the same package.
    • Empty and duplicate package entries are rejected. When package details are unavailable, comparisons use names and versions parsed from package specifications.

The comparison page now supports comparing versions of the same package. It parses package specs, filters facets for version comparisons, and uses base package names for replacement suggestions and trend charts.

Changes: Package version comparison

Layer / File(s) Summary
Comparison utilities and sentinel
shared/utils/compare.ts, app/composables/usePackageComparison.ts
Shared utilities define the no-dependency sentinel, identify version comparisons, return unique base packages, and resolve package display information. The composable imports the sentinel from the shared utility.
Package selection and replacement inputs
app/components/Compare/PackageSelector.vue, app/composables/useCompareReplacements.ts
Package selection trims and validates specs, filters results by selected base names, and routes selected packages by parsed name and version. Replacement fetches and suggestions use unique base names and exclude the sentinel.
Comparison page and version-specific facets
app/pages/compare.vue, app/components/Compare/FacetSelector.vue, app/components/Compare/FacetScatterChart.vue
The page parses package specs for comparison columns and replacement lookups. It filters facets across exports and rendered views, and uses unique base packages for trends. The facet selector and scatter chart apply version-specific facet filtering.
Chart package labels and colours
app/components/Compare/FacetBarChart.vue, app/utils/compare-scatter-chart.ts, test/unit/app/utils/compare-scatter-chart.spec.ts, test/nuxt/a11y.spec.ts
Chart data uses resolved package display information for labels and framework colour lookup. Scatter labels use an ellipsis limit of 18. Tests expect the updated limit and supply the required bar-chart data prop.

Explanation

Issue [#1973] requests comparison of different package versions on /compare. The reviewed changes parse package specifications, retain package versions in comparison columns and labels, support multiple versions of one package, prevent duplicate base-package selections, and filter package-level facets when the comparison uses versions. The changes also update the affected unit and accessibility tests. The issue has no additional coding requirements.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files support the linked feature. compare.vue, the comparison selectors and composables, shared comparison helpers, and chart components implement version-aware selection, display, facet handling, and chart data. The test changes cover the updated chart labels and accessibility inputs. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Minor · Allow bare package names after pinned selections. · PackageSelector.vue:50-59

app/components/Compare/PackageSelector.vue:50-59
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Allow bare package names after pinned selections.

Entering lodash@latest already works after selecting lodash@3.10.1. The comparison route resolves latest through the package's dist-tags and fetches that manifest.

The selection-order defect affects only bare lodash. A pinned selection hides the bare package from filteredResults, so the Enter fallback rejects it. Hide a package only when its unversioned entry is already selected.

Minor · Use a unique key for each selected package specification. · compare.vue:57-68

app/pages/compare.vue:57-68
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use a unique key for each selected package specification.

The direct removal case is safe because Vue synchronises the matching prefix and suffix. However, changing the URL selection from [pkg@1, pkg@2, other] to [other, pkg@1] enters Vue's duplicate-key branch.

Both old pkg headers can be patched against the same new vnode. The grid can therefore retain two pkg@1 headers and links.

It's ok for labels now ✓

I noticed a few other issues:

  1. when searching for a version without the patch unit, for example vue@3.3, it fails to load the stats for an expected 3.3.0. It would be more resilient to resolve to x.x.0 in this case
  2. discoverability: it should be indicated somewhere that comparing different versions of a package is possible, with an example of a valid search
  3. packages with long names are ellipsed in the scatter chart, masking the version number :
Image

A possible solution would be to display the version below the plot in the chart (label on top, plot, version below). But this could be addressed later, as it may come with its own set of impacts and challenges.

3.3 is a semver rather than a version I think. Some may expect it to resolve to the latest 3.3.x version instead of 3.3.0

In this PR only exact versions are supported at the moment, semver is out of scope for this PR and can be done in the next PR

  1. discoverability: it should be indicated somewhere that comparing different versions of a package is possible, with an example of a valid search

I'll add something and add a note that only exact versions are supported for now 👍

I think this can also be addressed in this PR since this is not just about versions

For example we currently have this for long scoped npm packages:
