Repository navigation
feat(projects): choose where New project creates repositories - #29271
New project always creates its repository in ~/.t3/projects. People who keep every repo in one folder, like ~/repos, have to move each project afterwards or symlink the T3 data folder. "Add project starts in" doesn't help because it only sets where the Add Project browser opens.
Change
Settings → Projects now has a New projects section above the project list, with a New projects directory field next to "Add project starts in" (moved here from the Threads page). New project, the command palette and agents through t3_project_create create repositories in that folder. Empty keeps ~/.t3/projects. Existing projects stay where they are.
newProjectsDirectory is a per-environment server setting. The path and ~ resolve on the server machine, so remote and mobile clients get the host's folder.
The server resolves it with the worktree location's helper (resolveDirectorySetting, renamed from resolveWorktreesDirectory). A relative path, a path from another OS, or a drive root falls back to the default. The creation preview ("Goes in ...") always shows the real destination.
settingsUpdated now carries newProjectsRoot, so open clients update the preview as soon as the setting changes. Older servers omit it and clients keep the last value.
A newProjectsDirectory capability hides the field on servers that would ignore it, the same way the worktree location field is gated.
Settings search lists "New projects directory" and "Worktree location" when some connected environment supports them. If the current scope includes one that doesn't, the settings page asks you to pick a supporting environment. This reuses the existing auto-settle availability check, now generalized to capabilities (getSettingsSearchTargetAvailability).
Since fix: new projects start their first thread in the project folder, not a worktree #17371, a project with no threads that sits directly in the new-projects folder starts its first thread in its checkout, even when the default is "New worktree". The rule treats that folder as a sign that T3 created the project. A custom folder like ~/repos also holds repos the user added, so the rule now applies only while the root is T3's own folder. The server reports that as newProjectsRootIsCustom beside newProjectsRoot, so an invalid setting that falls back to the default keeps the rule. With a custom folder, a new project's first thread follows the default mode. Telling the two apart exactly would need a project-origin field in the event-sourced project record.
Not covered: mobile has no field for this yet. Mobile settings have no directory text fields today ("Add project starts in" and worktree location are also web/desktop only). Mobile does create projects in the configured folder and shows the right preview.
Scope and approval
Tracked in #14960. Julius's triage there called a separate "New projects are created in" setting the better fit than reusing "Add project starts in", but asked for a product decision through Ideas first. That discussion is #14973 (22 upvotes). No maintainer has approved it there yet, so this PR still needs that sign-off.
The change configures an existing capability. New project already creates repositories in one server-resolved folder (ManagedProjectFolders), and the setting only chooses that folder. The flow, scaffold and project record don't change.
This revives #18905 by Noojuno, which went stale with conflicts against current main. It follows the same design, rebuilt on current main, with the stricter path resolution and the setting on the Projects page.
Verification
ManagedProjectFolders.test.ts: a new case shows creation landing in the configured folder and an invalid relative setting falling back to <T3 home>/projects. It fails on main, where the setting doesn't exist.
serverConfigProjection.test.ts: a new case shows the root following a settings update and surviving an update without it.
projectSettings.test.ts: a new case shows an existing repo under a custom root keeping the worktree default. It fails without the fix. A second case shows an invalid setting that resolves to the default root keeping the first-thread rule.
settingsSearch.test.ts: search hides both directory settings when no environment supports them. A new case shows the result listed when one environment supports it, and the landing scope reported as unavailable while an unsupported environment is selected.
vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck and react compiler pass. Two tests fail locally on macOS, GitVcsDriverCore.test.ts "keeps generated worktree folders short" (/private/var temp path) and ServerEnvironment.test.ts "publishes proven install ownership". Both fail the same way with main's versions of those files.
CI's MessagesTimeline.browser.test.tsx "keeps the worked-for heading in place when expanded at the bottom" timed out once on 216f7ec. This PR doesn't touch that area. The test passed 3 of 3 runs locally on this branch, and main's CI is green.

Saving the directory and creating a project through the client:
Model: Claude Opus 5.5. Harness: Claude Code in T3 Code.
New project always created repositories in ~/.t3/projects. A new
"New projects directory" setting on the Settings > Projects page now picks
the folder, per environment. Empty keeps the default. The server streams
the resolved folder with settings updates, so the creation preview stays
current. The "New projects" section moves from Threads to Projects.
Based on the approach in pingdotgg#18905.

Searching for “New projects directory” returns this result even when a connected server lacks newProjectsDirectory, so users land on /settings/projects with no corresponding control. This entry is not filtered by capability availability; gate it on newProjectsDirectory as well.

Fixed in bcbeb8d. Search results for "New projects directory" now need every connected environment in scope to report the newProjectsDirectory capability, the same rule the row uses. "Worktree location" had the same gap against worktreesDirectory, so it gets the same gate. The existing "hides settings whose controls are unavailable" test now covers both entries.
Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The setting preserves the existing repository destination unless configured, but its resolved root also controls first-thread defaults. Confirm whether existing repositories beneath a custom root should start locally rather than use the configured worktree default, potentially placing agent edits in the original checkout.

The server resolves the new-project directory from newProjectsDirectory, with a default fallback, and sends the resolved root and custom-root status in config updates. The Projects settings page exposes directory controls and capability-gated settings search. Thread-mode resolution receives the custom-root status.
Server settings include newProjectsDirectory, and execution environments can report support for it. ManagedProjectFolders resolves the configured path and falls back to the default when needed. Project creation uses the selected root. Tests and mocks use the resolver method. The shared directory helper is renamed to resolveDirectorySetting.
Config snapshots and settings-update events include the resolved root and custom-root flag. Client projections apply these values and retain them when later events omit them.
The Projects settings page adds directory controls. The new-project directory row appears only when all connected environments report support. Settings restore and search include the setting, and documentation describes its path behavior and default.
Thread-mode resolution for custom directories packages/shared/src/projectSettings.ts, packages/shared/src/projectSettings.test.ts, apps/web/src/hooks/useHandleNewThread.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/use-new-task-project-defaults.ts
Thread-mode resolution receives the custom-root flag. When the root is custom, the resolver bypasses the name-only project-folder check.
Windows users may receive an unexpected worktree-based first thread, and older Add-project links open the Threads settings page instead of Projects. These are localized issues suitable for bounded follow-up.

…orktree default
The first-thread rule from pingdotgg#17371 treats any thread-less folder directly
under the new-projects root as a fresh project and starts it locally. A
custom root like ~/repos also holds repos the user added, so their first
thread ran in the original checkout. The rule now applies only to T3's
own projects folder.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Re the approvability note about first-thread defaults under a custom root: fixed in 216f7ec.
The #17371 rule takes "a thread-less folder directly under the new-projects root" as a sign that T3 created the project, and starts its first thread in the checkout. That holds for ~/.t3/projects, which only T3 writes to. A custom root like ~/repos also holds repos the user added, so those repos would have run their first thread in the original checkout. resolveNewThreadEnvMode now applies the rule only while newProjectsDirectory is empty. With a custom folder, every first thread follows the configured default. A case in projectSettings.test.ts covers an existing repo under a custom root keeping worktree.
Trade-off: a project T3 creates in a custom folder, with "New worktree" as the default, starts its first thread in a worktree. That matches the behavior before #17371. Telling those projects apart from added repos exactly would need a project-origin field on the event-sourced project record, which seemed too much for this PR. The user docs and the PR description now say this.
…nt serves them
Search hid "New projects directory" and "Worktree location" unless every
connected environment supported them, so a mixed-version setup could not
find them from the command palette. Search now lists them when one
environment does, and landing in a scope without support asks for a
supporting environment, reusing the auto-settle availability check.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Scoped discovery from the command palette: fixed in 1d966f6, though not by passing a scope. The palette has no settings scope to pass. The real gap was that search needed every connected environment to support the setting, so a mixed-version setup hid it. Search now lists "New projects directory" and "Worktree location" when one environment supports them. Landing in a scope that includes an unsupported environment shows the existing "choose a supporting environment" notice. The auto-settle availability check is generalized to capabilities (getSettingsSearchTargetAvailability) rather than adding a second mechanism. A new case in settingsSearch.test.ts covers it.
CI: the Test Web failure on 216f7ec is MessagesTimeline.browser.test.tsx "keeps the worked-for heading in place when expanded at the bottom", which timed out at 15s. This PR doesn't touch that component. The test passed 3 of 3 runs locally on this branch and main is green, so it looks flaky. I don't have rights to rerun the job, and the new push starts a fresh run anyway.
The first-thread exception read the raw setting, so a non-empty value the
server rejects (such as a relative path) disabled the rule even though
projects still land in T3's own folder. The server now reports whether the
resolved root is custom, and the rule uses that.

Redirect links to the moved Add project setting.
When a user opens an existing /settings/threads#add-project-starts-in link, movedSettingsPath does not check /settings/threads. The link stays on Threads, but the row now renders on Projects. Add /settings/threads to SPLIT_SETTINGS_PATHS so the existing anchor resolves to its new page. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

The New projects section moved from Threads to Projects, so saved links
such as /settings/threads#add-project-starts-in opened a page without the
row. Threads now redirects anchors whose row lives elsewhere.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Re CodeRabbit's review note on settingsSearch.ts (SPLIT_SETTINGS_PATHS): fixed in fa7a797. /settings/threads is now a split path, so movedSettingsPath sends /settings/threads#add-project-starts-in to Projects, where that row now lives. The old section anchor #new-projects also maps to /settings/projects. Threads anchors whose rows still live there, and links with no anchor, are left alone. The existing path mappings are unchanged. Both directions are covered in the movedSettingsPath tests.

On Windows, a new-projects setting that names the default folder in
different case resolved to a custom root, so new projects lost the
first-thread rule. The resolver now compares with the shared
platform-aware path comparison and returns the default root for it.

reproduced on github/main (a036489016): setting "add project starts in" to ~/pr29271-repos still created "Directory Check" in /home/user/main/.t3/projects/directory-check. a real codex turn wrote verification.txt there.
on this head, settings → projects exposes "new projects directory". saving ~/pr29271-repos immediately changes the creation preview and creates a committed git repository at /home/user/pr29271-repos/directory-check. a real codex turn wrote its verification file there, then called t3_project_create without workspaceRoot, creating /home/user/pr29271-repos/agent-directory-check.
with "new worktree" as the default, a custom-root project's first real turn ran in a separate git worktree and left the original checkout clean. an invalid relative directory fell back to .t3/projects; its first real turn stayed in the checkout. / and a windows path also showed the default destination on linux.
reset clears the setting. saving survives a browser reload and a server restart. existing projects retain their paths. add-project browsing still starts in its separate configured directory. settings search finds the new field, and the old threads anchor redirects to projects.
blacksmith: all 107 existing tests passed across ManagedProjectFolders, serverConfigProjection, projectSettings, path, and settingsSearch. current-head github checks have no failures or pending checks; optional jobs are skipped. no source changes or pushes were needed.
